We are aware of an issue that is impacting some iPad users on iOS 15 or newer. Some users have reported having issues with tracking when using Wi-Fi, or backgrounding the app. What appears to be happening, is when backgrounded, the device is unable to switch over from Wi-Fi to cellular to continue providing GPS fixes. As a result users, might see a straight line when tracking connecting the area where the signal was lost, to when it was captured again (i.e. the app opened).
Based on our testing, as well as Apple's forums, this appears to be a widespread issue that is impacting more than just Avenza Maps. Despite this being an Apple operating system that requires their fix, we are looking into a solution on our side in the interim,
For users experiencing this issue, there are several things that you can try to troubleshoot the problem:
- Within Avenza Maps go to Settings > GPS and change the source to "Internal Sources Only"
- When initiating tracking, turn off Wi-Fi so that you are using cellular right away
- Within Avenza Maps, go to Settings > Map View > toggle the Keep Screen On
- Please note that this option will result in faster battery usage as you are preventing the device from going to sleep, thereby keeping the GPS signal active
Again, please know that we are actively monitoring this situation, and we hope that Apple will have this resolved on their end as soon as possible.
