Fault with compass and bearings
I am in Sydney, Australia, using Avenza Maps 4.0.4(158) Build 13 ARCH64, on an Android 12 phone. Here the magnetic declination is about +12 degrees. I am experiencing what seems to be a fault with compass direction.
In settings, under Map View, there is a setting with the title ‘Use true north’ and the description is ‘Use magnetic or true north for compass headings’. With ‘Use true north’ unchecked (turned off) I would expect the compass north pointer to point to magnetic north, but I find it points to true north. With ‘Use true north’ checked (turned on) I would expect the compass north pointer to point to true north, but I find it points to magnetic north.
This is not just a reversal of meaning. The issue causes navigational problems. If you are navigating to a placemark with ‘Use true north’ checked (turned on) the green bearing pointer points to the right of the destination point, by around the magnetic declination of 12 degrees. Following the green bearing pointer then takes you in an arc towards the destination, rather than a straight line. You are always aiming to the right of the destination by about 12 degrees, but you do get closer and closer until you effectively reach it.
The two screenshots below illustrate the problem as much as I can. They are both taken with the phone pointing towards true north. The first one is with the ‘Use tree north’ setting unchecked, and the second is with the 'Use true north' setting checked.
A second issue/request is this:
I think the ‘Use true north’ setting should influence not just the compass, but all bearings in the app. I would like it to alter the bearing used in the ‘Draw and measure’ feature, but I find the bearing of a line created with ‘Draw and measure’ is always a bearing from true north, regardless of the ‘Use true north’ setting.
