You can create geofences around placemarks, lines, areas, GPS tracks or around the map itself. Geofences will alert the user if they are entering the feature, leaving the feature, or entering and leaving the feature. Users will also be able to set the distance for the geofence, as well as set the title. Once the distance is set, regardless of the specified unit, the distance will convert to imperial or metric (feet or meters) just as it does when recording GPS tracks, or when viewing navigation.
Geofences can be created from the edit feature screen, from going to the map view and tapping on to Monitor Geofences, as well as when importing a layer.
This article will step through the following:
- Creating a geofence from the Monitor Geofences tool
- Creating a geofence on import
- Geofence notifications
- Geofence subscription usage
To access geofences from the map view tools, tap on and then ‘Monitor Geofences’. To add a new geofence, tap the at the top right. From here, there is the option to add a geofence to any feature already on the map, or to the perimeter of any active georeferenced map itself. There must be features already on the map to add geofences from the Monitor Geofences option.
When importing a layer (either from the Map View or Layers tab), users are able to create geofences automatically for the features contained within the layer. When importing, users can select the distance threshold, as well as what type of notification to receive, and when to run the geofence.
If users have geofences enabled, the notifications will be toggled on. The geofences can be toggled off or on individually or as a whole.
In order to receive notifications, Avenza Maps will also need to have permission to allow notifications. This permission can be accessed from the device Settings page. Avenza Maps will follow the sound permissions users currently have set on the device, for example, if the device is set to ‘Do not disturb’ then Avenza Maps will not make sound notifications. If the device is set to full volume, then users will hear their geofence notifications.
On Android devices, users can specify the notification duration as well. This can be accessed by opening Avenza Maps the “My Maps” screen, tapping , selecting Settings > Geofencing. This timer will allow the user to determine how long the app will continue to show geofencing notifications (for a triggered geofence).
Depending on the type of subscription you have with Avenza Maps, there are certain restrictions to the number and type of geofences that you can create. The table below outlines the number and type of geofences available to users based on their subscription level:
|Geofence Individual Features
|Geofence Alerts for Map Boundaries
Geofence Layers - this refers to the number of layers that can be geofenced on import
Geofence individual features - this refers to the number of features that can be geofenced regardless of layer.
Global geofences - this refers to the ability to set notifications for geofences regardless of whether the map is open or not.
Geofence alerts for map boundaries - this refers to the ability to set a geofence for an entire map boundary rather than specific features.
