Exporting and sharing map features

Map features, such as placemarks, tracks,  lines, and areas can be exported for use in another device or GIS software, or as a way to backup data by storing it outside of the device itself.  

Users can export map features directly from a map (one map at a time), or export all features at once from the Layers tab.

Supported export formats for map features

Currently, the following formats are supported for exporting map features:

• KML/KMZ (placemarks, lines, tracks, and areas)
• Shapefile* (placemarks, lines, tracks, and areas)
• CSV (placemarks only)
• GPX (placemarks, lines, and tracks)
• GeoPackage* (placemarks, lines, tracks, and areas)

*Shapefiles and GeoPackages require a Pro Subscription. Shapefiles need the appropriate files combined together in a ZIP folder in order to successfully import (.shp, .shx, .prj, and .dbf)

Export settings

You can export with the following options:

• Filename - By default, this will use the name of the map but can be changed to something more appropriate if required.
• Data Type - This section allows specifying whether to export only the map, only the layers, or both the map and layers together. When 'Maps + Layers'* is selected, the default export format is GeoPackage.
• Data For Export - This section allows specifying the export format and whether to export only the schema or selected features and layers.
• Include In Export - This option is valid for data that has images attached to it, and if the appropriate data type is selected (KML/KMZ, Shapefile* or GeoPackage*). The available resolution options are:
• Small
• Medium
• Large

• Additional - This section allows converting tracks to lines when the toggle is enabled.
• Export - This option will export the data using the settings you designated

*Shapefiles and GeoPackages require a Pro Subscription. Shapefiles need the appropriate files combined together in a ZIP folder in order to successfully import (.shp, .shx, .prj, and .dbf)

**This option is only applicable when exporting custom imported maps. Maps downloaded from the Map Store cannot be exported.

Export options

Map Features and layers can be exported using many of the same methods used when importing features.  Some of the options include:

• AirDrop (iOS) / Nearby Share (Android)
• Local device storage
• Cloud storage
• Email

Exporting map features

To export map features, first navigate to the Map Layers menu or the Layers tab:

Android

1. Tap .
2. Choose the applicable export settings (see above for details on each setting).
• To export specific features or layers, please use the features option under the 'Data for exporting' section.
• To export schema only, please select this option under the 'Data for exporting' section.
3. Tap to export the data.

iOS

1. Tap .
2. Choose the applicable export settings (see above for details on each setting).
• To export specific features or layers, please use the features option under the 'Data for exporting' section.
• To export schema only, please select this option under the 'Data for exporting' section.
3. Tap 'Export' to export the data.
4. Choose where you'll export the files to:

• • • Export the files to e-mail or cloud storage apps you have on your device.
    • AirDrop the files directly to Avenza on another iOS device. NOTE: For iOS devices to only other iOS devices, custom imported maps can also be shared this way via AirDrop. Differing operating systems or app versions may affect this ability.

 

Under the ‘Data for Export’ section, tap on ‘Features’ to select all features associated with the current map or to make a custom selection.

Exporting custom Maps and Layers as GeoPackage

To export map features and a custom map, first navigate to the Map Layers menu or the Layers tab:

Android

1. Tap
2. Choose the applicable export settings (see above for details on each setting)
• To export a custom map and its layers, tap ‘Export’ under the ‘Data Type’ section, then select ‘Maps + Layers’. The export format will automatically be set to GeoPackage*.
3. In the ‘Data for Exporting’ section, ensure that one map is selected.
4. Tap to export the map and data as a GeoPackage.

GeoPackages* require a Pro Subscription.

iOS

1. Tap
