With the release of Avenza Maps version 5.8, the ability to backup and restore your data was introduced. Available to active Pro and Plus subscribers, the Backup and Restore function allows users to store data created in Avenza Maps to a location of their choosing. This data includes imported maps, maps purchased from the Map Store, layers and sublayers. Please note that app settings are not included in this backup file.
Backup and Restore can be accessed by going to Settings > Backup and Restore. Here users will be met with two options, 'Backup' and 'Restore.
Backup
Starting a backup packages all eligible data (imported maps, Map Store maps, layers, sublayers) along with their organizational structure into an .ambackup file. This file can then be saved on the device, exported to a cloud storage location, or sent to another user.
When tapping the 'Backup' button, all aforementioned data currently within the app will be immediately compressed into an .ambackup file. Once this data is compressed, as shown by the progress counter beside each data type, it can be exported or shared.
Once the file has been exported successfully, users will be met with a screen showing 'Success' messaging and an option to continue their work.
Restore
Upon tapping 'Restore' users will be brought to their device Files/File Picker. Once the .ambackup file has been located, tap on it to begin the restore process. Users will see a 'Restoring backup' screen, with progress counters beside each data type.
Once the restoration is complete, users will see a 'Success' screen stating all files have been restored. Tapping on 'Done' will bring users back to the Settings menu.
When returning to the Library, users will see a folder titled 'Restored' with the date the restore occurred, under both the Maps and Layers toggle. Users should be aware that it may take some additional time for their data to be fully downloaded after restoring from a backup.
