Tthe new OSM Basemap allows users connected to the internet to access a global base map powered by data from OpenStreetMap (OSM). OSM is a collaborative project to create a free editable geographic database of the world.
How to access the OSM Basemaps:
- Open the Avenza Maps App to the My Maps Page
- Tap the OSM Basemap bar (tapping on "Open basemap")
This opens up the Map View and can be used with the Map View Basic Tools and Location Tools. The OSM has global coverage so users are able to explore worldwide.
Download offline region
To download an area for offline use, users can tap the icon and select "Download offline region" while connected to the internet. The extent of the region (highlighted by the lightbox) is fixed, however, users are able to choose the scale (by zooming in and out) of the downloadable region. The region can be named by the user and will be saved under the "My Maps" page.
Please note downloading an offline region can take up to 1 GB of storage on your device. Downloads for offline maps count towards the 3-map import limit in place for the free recreational tier. Users with Plus or Pro subscriptions will be able to access an unlimited number of offline map downloads.
Basemap Types
The OSM Basemaps tool also allows users to choose a map type. This option can be accessed by tapping the layers icon at the bottom banner of the map display. Here you are able to choose between light and dark styling. New subscribers to Plus and all Pro subscribers will also have the option to choose satellite imagery for their basemap. Please note that at this time, satellite imagery cannot be downloaded for offline use.

I love this feature. With this, I have no reason to use any other mobile GPS app—thank you, Avenza!
