The Avenza Maps Draw and Measure tool that allows users to draw and measure lines, areas, and circles. This tool also allows for the saving of measured areas.
This article will step through the following:
- Accessing the Draw and Measure Tool
- Drawing and Measuring a Line
- Drawing and Measuring an Area
- Drawing and Measuring a Circle
- Drawing Using Point-By-Point, or Course and Distance
- Changing Settings
Accessing the Draw and Measure Tool
- Open the map that you want to draw/measure lines or areas on
- Tap , then tap 'Draw and Measure'
To draw and measure a line:
- With the Draw and Measure tool open, pan around the map until the crosshair is centered where you would like to create your first point
- Once the crosshair is in place, tap on to create the first vertex
- Continue in this fashion until your line is complete. If you need to undo a point you just created, tap on to remove the last vertex
- While drawing, you will see the line measurements at the top of the screen for the current segment, and the total of all lines
- Once satisfied with your line, tap on the lower right-hand side to save the line. It will now be listed in your Map Features list
To draw and measure an area:
- With the Draw and Measure tool open, pan around the map until the crosshair is centered where you would like to create your first point
- Once the crosshair is in place, tap on to create the first vertex
- Once you have a minimum of 3 vertices (2 lines), tap to toggle it to an Area (). If you need to undo a point you just created, tap on to remove the last vertex
- When you switch to Area mode, you will see the current measurements at the top of the screen for the current area and perimeter of the feature
- Once satisfied with the area, tap on the lower right-hand side to save. It will now be listed in your Map Features list
Drawing and Measuring a Circle
To draw and measure a circle:
- With the Draw and Measure tool open, pan around the map until the crosshair is centered where you would like to create your first point
- Once the crosshair is in place, tap to create the first vertex
- Once you have 1 vertex, tap to enable it. If you need to undo a point you just created, tap on to remove the last vertex
- When you switch to Circle mode, you can continue drawing in and out to increase or decrease the size on the fly. With the circle mode enabled, you will also see the current measurements at the top of the screen for the current area and perimeter of the feature
-
Once satisfied with the circle, tap on the lower right-hand side to save. It will now be listed in your Map Features list
Drawing Using Point-By-Point, or Course and Distance
To draw a feature using Point-By-Point or Course and Distance options:
- With the Draw and Measure tool open, pan around the map until the crosshair is centered where you would like to create your first point (Course and Distance only), and then use to create the first point. Tap on the “Point” field to edit the (coordinates) location of the next point, followed by tapping on to create the next vertex.
-
The default option is Course and Distance. To access Point-By-Point, tap the “Point” field as mentioned.
- Course and Distance - allows the user to enter the heading and distance they would like a line drawn. This will be drawn from the initial location of the crosshair
- Point-By-Point - this does not require the crosshair to be centered on a location and uses known coordinates to draw from point to point
- Once you are satisfied with your feature, tap on the lower right-hand side to save.
Users can access the Line and Area settings while in the Draw and Measure tool.
For Android devices this can be done by tapping in the top right corner to see the available settings.
For iOS devices this can be done by tapping in the top right corner to see the available settings. Please note that changes made here will override your global settings.

Are there any plans to have the drop down window showing the distances and bearings etc. to disappear while a person is measuring. This window blocks half of the map or screen, therefore making the process annoying. It is almost impossible to measure area. Someone please advise.
