Plot GPS Average

Pro users are able to plot placemarks with improved accuracy using the Plot GPS Average tool. Plot GPS Average is a tool in which the users' fixed location can be determined with a possibly higher degree of accuracy (dependent on location, number of satellites in view and possible interference) by sampling the users' location over a period of time and then creating an 'averaged' location coordinate from the collection of sampled points. 

Plot GPS Average can be accessed by tapping on the map toolbar.

How it works

The Plot GPS Average tool has 3 modes to determine how the GPS average will be created. By default, the tool starts in manual mode, but a different mode can be selected by tapping   (Android) or (iOS) at the top right of the map. 

• Manual - allows the user to manually start and stop the placemark averaging process after any length of time.
• Timer - allows the user to set the duration of the averaging process, with a minimum of 15 seconds.
• Number of fixes - allows the user to set how many fixes to include in the GPS average.

After tapping ‘Plot GPS Average’, users will see the number of GPS fixes included in the average. Depending on the mode currently in use, they will also see the duration, time remaining, or fixes remaining. They will also see all the location fixes in the form of colored dots around the location dot.

If the GPS average is not yet stable, then the user will see ‘More fixes needed’ below the coordinates. Tap the to get more information. More details will be provided in the message that appears. Once the average is stable, the text below the coordinates will change to ‘Stable average’ with the error in brackets.

If there is a stable average, then the user will see ‘Stable Average’ below the coordinates. Users will need to have at least 30 fixes in order to see ‘Stable Average’. More information can be provided by tapping the beside ‘Stable Average’.

Users also have the option to interrupt the Plot GPS Average tool by tapping ‘Stop process’ at any time. Tapping ‘Plot GPS average’ will start the averaging process again from the beginning. This can only be used while the tool is running before the placemark is dropped.

iOS (the message is the same for Android)

If the tool is in manual mode and the user is satisfied with the number of fixes, the status of the average (stable vs unstable), the user can drop the placemark by tapping ‘Add placemark’. Once the placemark is created, the user will be taken to the Edit Placemark screen where they can edit the information of the placemark.

If the tool is in the timer or number of fixes modes, the tool will automatically drop the placemark once the averaging process is complete, taking the user directly to the Edit Placemark screen. All of the information from the Plot GPS Average tool will be displayed within the ‘Description’ field of the placemark.
