Within Avenza Maps users have the ability to record their tracks through the use of GPS. Please note that in order to use the Record GPS Tracks feature, users need to have a device that is GPS enabled. Some devices, such as certain models of iPads, do not have a built-in GPS chip, which means that while they will work while connected to the network, once the device is no longer connected to the internet, the GPS will no longer work. Record GPS Tracks is used to record your route, speed, distance, and elevation while you walk, hike, run, bike, or do anything else outdoors.
Recording a Track
GPS tracks are recorded directly within a Map View and therefore require a map to be open. It is possible to continue tracking off the map, and tracking can continue regardless. Tracking can also occur across Map Collections as well. There are a variety of GPS Settings that allow users to customize the accuracy based on various scenarios (walking versus driving). For more information, please see GPS Settings.
To record a GPS track:
- Have an appropriate map open that covers the desired area
- Tap on and select Record GPS Tracks. Alternatively, you can swipe up on the Navigation bar and select "Tracking"
- Once a signal has been established (will see "Ready to track" displayed), tap the “Start tracking” icon to start recording. Your tracks will continue recording, even if you minimize the app.
- When you are done recording, tap 'Stop' and the track will be saved as a Map Feature. You also have the option to pause tracking instead by tapping ‘Pause’.
You can also access the Tracking Screen by pulling up on the tab located just above the coordinates in the map view.
Viewing a Track
Saved tracks can be viewed on the map or exported for use on another device, or software. For more detailed track information, tap the track to show its label, then tap the information icon. To view Track Statistics, tap on "Show Graph".
Track To Area
Pro users have the ability to convert a track to an area. To convert a track, tap on the track to view its details, and select Convert To Area. You will then be able to select whether to Convert the Area, Convert and Hide Track, Convert and Hide Area, or to Cancel the action.
