The purpose of this tutorial is to show you how to export map features from Avenza Maps for use within other software such as Google Earth or in Avenza Maps on another device. We allow features to be exported to several locations on the device or through cloud storage and allow for the export of all Layers in the app at once or the export of specific features. In this tutorial, we will go over how to export several map features, including lines, placemarks with photos, and shapefiles.
There are several export options offered for the data format inside Avenza Maps that may seem very similar, here is a guideline on which format is appropriate for your intended use:
Placemarks- If you only intend to export placemarks and are interested in getting just the longitude and latitude from the data, no additional GPS info, using the CSV format will take up the least amount of file storage to export. If you are interested in using the most lossless data storage format or sharing the data between GPS devices, GPX format will be the most beneficial format. Lastly, the standard format for exporting features, KML format, is most optimal for exporting placemarks that have photos attached.
Lines/Tracks- KML and GPX formats are available for exporting Lines/Tracks, As with placemarks the GPX format will preserve more detailed information but will require more storage space. Tracks also require more storage space as they store more detailed info then lines, such as the velocity and time of recording for each position.
Areas- The only available format for exporting Areas is KML format.
First, we will import a set of features from the Import Features tutorial that we will use to demonstrate different export features. Import the Features_Tutorial zip file to Avenza Maps and
