This tutorial will explore the different features you can create using Avenza Maps, including creating a placemark and a route, and then how to use our navigation tools in conjunction with them.
Creating a Placemark
Creating a placemark is a great way to mark areas of interest that you would like to make note of. For example, they are a great way to mark campsites, workstations in the field, or places you want to visit.
1. Open the Banff National Park- Banff Area Day Hikes from the Banff National Park Bundle (Map Store Tutorial)
2. Move the map until the crosshairs are hovering over the Gondola Symbol
3. With the crosshairs hovering over the area of interest, press the ‘Add Placemark’ symbol.
4. Let's give the placemark a name. Here we will name the placemark Banff Gondola. You can also edit the style of the placemark by tapping on the placemark icon under the Style tab.
There are many default icons that come with the app! Here we will choose the "Points of Interest" icon. If you were wanting to import your own icons please refer to How can I get a custom symbol set in Avenza Maps?
6. Press Back in the upper left corner of the screen to save your changes!
7. You can always edit the Placemark in the future by simply tapping on the placemark. This action will bring up a basic information panel. To view or edit all details, just drag the panel up!
Creating a route and Navigating
This is a great tool for when you need to navigate along a customized route, such as a hike or a specific road trip.
Navigation will start from your current location, and the compass will appear, showing the direction you need to head.
To Start a Route:
1. Swipe up from the Status Bar at the bottom of the screen (the bar that displays your current coordinates).
2. Select the Navigation tab.
3. Tap Create a Route.
4. To begin, position the crosshairs over your starting location (the Hotel symbol 'H') and tap Add Point.
5. Move the map to the next desired location, and tap Add Point. A connecting line will instantly be drawn between the two points.
6. Continue this process of moving the map and tapping Add Point along the road toward the Gondola.
7. When your route is complete, confirm the action by tapping the checkmark at the bottom of the screen.
7. A window will pop up asking if you want to Navigate this route, select OK
8. Select Stop to return to the regular map view
9. We're going to make some edits to the line name. Begin by tapping on the line segment and drag up from the status bar to bring up the basic information panel.
10. Select Edit to change the name and name it Route to Banff Gondola.
Navigate to Feature
There is another way to use the navigation tools, which is to navigate directly to the feature
1. Begin by opening the Navigation tab by swiping up from the bottom of the screen
2. Select Navigate to Feature.
3. Select the Banff from the list and then select the Route to Banff Gondola
4. The compass will display and show you the direction of the feature from wherever you are in the world.
