This tutorial will explore the basics of the map view within the app and will cover topics such as how to locate yourself, the compass, coordinate display format, map info, searching a map, and the other key icons on the map view (map features, tools, etc.)
Map View Icons
When you first open a map, you will see several different features and tools along the top and bottom toolbars
Map Details
1. Open Toronto, ON Parks & Trails (West)
2. Click on the “i” icon in the top right corner, this is the Map Details.
- This will show important information about the map you are looking at, like the title, the publisher, a short description of the map, and when you imported it
- Scroll down to see what projection the map is in, in this case, it is in NAD83 / UTM zone 17N
- You can also delete the map from here by clicking on the garbage icon in the top right corner
Search
- You can search for features you have created on the map, this helps if you have a lot of features and want to find a specific one
- You can also search using coordinates if you have an exact location you want to find on the map
- Zoom in a bit on the map
- Enter 43.647297, -79.462558 into the search bar and select ‘Go to coordinates on map’
- This will bring the crosshairs to High Park
- If you have not created a feature, you have the option to search using OpenStreetMap
- Type ‘Centre Island’ into the search and select ‘Search for ‘Centre Island’ under OpenStreetMap
- Select Centre Island, Old Toronto, Ontario
- This will bring the crosshairs to the Toronto Islands and automatically create a feature called ‘Centre Island’
- Click on the search icon next to the Map Details icon
Location/Compass
1. Open the map
2. Press the arrowhead icon in the bottom right corner, this is the location/compass tool. The crosshairs will automatically travel to your blue location dot
3. Press the icon again, and the map will switch to compass mode
- If the device does not have a compass built-in then this tool will not work
4. Compass can also be accessed from the Navigation bar (slide up from the bottom)
- On the ‘Location’ tab you’ll see a compass and your coordinates
- The compass is also available in the ‘Tracking’ tab
5. In order to see your location on a map, the map must be active and properly georeferenced
- On the ‘My Maps’ tab, it will say under the map ‘On Map’ if you are currently on a map. This also applies to maps in the Map Store (when searching for maps in the list format)
- Go to the Map Store and search for a free map of the area you are currently in if you don’t already have one (or you can use the ‘Getting Started’ Map that automatically appears in your My Maps list)
